Yesterday in class we talked about parental involvement and how it was portrayed in the media as well as how it truly affected a child's upbringing. we discussed other cultures and societies and how they vary in parental involvement, such as japan.
Yesterday in the NY times, i was reading about a school district in New york and how asian-american parents are rarely seen at PTA meetings, but a large portion of their orchestra is asian american. the only times parents are present is when the teacher asks. the absense of this parents is in corralation with their own parents because they were only interested in their academics, nothing else.
i find this interesting because we just spoke of japan's parental culture to be stereotyped as heavily influenced in their children's lives.
my parents were pretty involved in my life in my elementary school years, it might not have been the PTA, but they were involved to my happiness.
