Last week, we spoke about gender in the class room. I was recalling my experiences volunteering at my sister's elementary school. In my sister's classroom, gender differences were very evident when it came to disciplinary actions. For example, when one of Kaitlyn's (my sister) boy classmates was yelling answers without raising his hand the teacher would ignore him, thus the boy student would "act out" more to get the teacher's attention. Whereas a girl student doing the same thing, the teacher would punish her severely. I think that this "unfair" punishment is a classic case of a "boys will be boys." Girls are expected to act more gracefully, while being polite and only speak when spoken too. Boys are expected to be "rowdy" and more playful than the girls in the classroom. I think about this now, even as I am an adult. I find that when I'm being "fiesty" or "offensive" while I'm trying to express my opinion, I get classified as "bitchy" but when a man does it, i've noticed, that he's "intelligent" or "thought-provoking"
I wonder the difference cases and how it affects other students at a qualitative level, without the statistics.
